Covid has once again forced a lockdown, which will undoubtedly cause disruption and hardship. Yet just as our communities have done in the past, we’re confident that we will come together to overcome our current adversities.
Over the last eight weeks there has been a consistent and sustained rise in the community transmission of the virus resulting now in a rapid increase in hospital admissions. The number of positive infections across the district jumped last week from 193.8 to 231 Covid cases per 100,000 residents. The increase in the infection rate continues and alarmingly the numbers now needing treatment in our local hospitals have doubled.
Lockdown will end on 2 December and our success or otherwise in containing and reducing infection rates will determine the Tier Level we will be living under this Christmas. So let’s use this new Lockdown to get on top of the virus and work together to:
Stay safe - Follow public health guidelines about social distancing and face coverings, and wash your hands regularly – check the latest Government guidance, here.
Nourish our bodies - Healthy balanced food will better support our immune system during this time.
Stay active - Physical activity is good for our general health, supports our immune system and boosts our mood.
Protect our mental health - This is a tough time for many of us. Here are some tips on supporting your mental health during lockdown.
The Covid-19 Community directory provides a one-stop shop for information on available local support and the services. The clinically extremely vulnerable, or those who are isolated, in need of emotional support, financial advice or help to access food or medicine best call the helpline directly on 0800 4081447. And remember the council’s Community Emergency Recovery Fund is still available for voluntary or community organisations who have adapted or increased their services to support those in need.
Despite the lockdown, key services continue to operate in line with government guidelines - up to date details on these temporary changes are available, here.
We recognise too that returning to a strong economy is essential for our longer-term wellbeing, so we’ll be ready to launch the new Local Restrictions Support Grant on Monday 16 November. Businesses with a rateable value that have been forced to close due to the new restrictions will be eligible to claim a single grant for a fixed amount to cover the four-week period. Information on the this scheme and how to submit a grant application is available, here.
Lest we forget, this week a strapping local lad was remembered by having a street named in his honour. Warwick Town Council’s suggestion was taken-up to name a number of new streets after our fallen local service personnel. It was a moving and fitting tribute to join the Lewis family as they gathered on the new development at Myton Green, off Europa Way to install the sign for Conrad Lewis Way. In 2011 Private Conrad Lewis lost his life in Afghanistan serving in the Fire Support Group attached to A Company, 3rd Battalion The Parachute Regiment (3 PARA). Conrad’s memory lives on through the charity created in his name.
