Keep calm and carry on! Warwick district has fared remarkably well throughout this pandemic compared to other parts of the country. Given the easing of the lockdown, with schools reopening and businesses restarting, it’s no surprise that the latest figures show an increase in the number of coronavirus cases.
Re-doubling our efforts and working together will enable us to fend off a resurgence of the virus in this area. Simple steps taken by each of us do make a difference so let’s not be complacent, adopting the new ‘rule of six’ for social gatherings and remembering the importance of the simple checks of ‘Hands, Face, Space’. You can update on the latest guidance, here.
Rest assured that we’re working with our partners at local universities, the police, landlords and our neighbouring councils to give clear guidance and support to students moving into our district this month. We’re encouraged by the positive and proactive approach being taken to ensure every student fully understands the responsibilities they have not only to protect themselves, but also their friends and families.
Many local charities and organisations have selflessly worked throughout the pandemic to support the most vulnerable people in our community, playing a vital role in delivering essential services to those most in need. We recognise that this herculean effort will have stretched resources, which is why we created the £250,000 Community Economic Recovery Fund. The application criteria have recently been updated, so grants can now be made to directly support their work, or for equipment and costs incurred, for example, in delivering their service. You can find more information or apply for a grant, here.
The Heritage Open Days Festival gets underway this weekend, through to 20 September. Venues across the district will be opening their doors offering a fascinating and free visit for us all. Why not check the website and plan your trip around the array of amazing heritage sites to learn more about our local history? For more information visit, www.warwickdc.gov.uk/heritageopendays.
Paint the Yard street art festival in Leamington’s Old Town is also running from this weekend. Creative Leamington and local artists have painted a number of murals on the buildings in Spencer’s Yard. If you get the chance, you really must take a look – there is some absolutely stunning work there, showcasing our emerging, vibrant and exciting arts sector. Finally, let’s continue to visit and support our brilliant town centres, shops, cafés, restaurants and weekly markets, which have all invested so much to keep us safe. The warm friendly service provided does much to make Warwick district such a great place to live, work and visit.
